Sickness absence policy (long form)
A long-form sickness absence policy for managing sickness absence and its effects in the workplace, suitable for larger organisations. The policy sets out procedures for employees to report sickness absence and for employers to manage it fairly and consistently. It covers key practical aspects such as evidence of incapacity, including self-certification and the Statement of Fitness for Work (fit note), and outlines provisions for both Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) and discretionary company sick pay. The policy also addresses the employer's legal obligations, including handling sensitive health data in compliance with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and considering the duty to make reasonable adjustments for employees with disabilities under the Equality Act 2010. It establishes a framework for managing attendance through return-to-work interviews, a multi-stage sickness absence meetings procedure for long-term or persistent absence, and guidance on a fair process that may ultimately lead to dismissal.
