Consumer law: introduction to key legislation
A practice note setting out the key UK legislation governing consumer contracts for the sale of goods, supply of services, and supply of digital content, including the Consumer Rights Act 2015, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024, and the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 (SI 2013/3134). The note also lists the EU legislation which UK legislation has implemented and subsequent EU legislation in the same area, such as the Goods Directive ((EU) 2019/771) and the Digital Content and Digital Services Directive ((EU) 2019/770). In addition, the note explores the ongoing impact of Brexit on UK consumer protection, addressing assimilated law and the growing divergence between UK and EU rules.
